Sadly, Dr. Seuss may have been talking about love of his mistress here. He had a lovely wife who was actually the catalyst to his fame when she encouraged him to change his career direction into books. She backed and supported him throughout until she became terribly sick. At that point, good old Theodore started spending his time with another woman. It hurt his ailing wife greatly, of course, and she took her own life.
Why can't people appreciate a good thing and show some loyalty?
I don't know. It seems to happen often to people once they find success, though not always. I reread the quote after you shared that history with me. Strangely, I still like the quote! :)
